“Playful Substance is a theater company like none other. It is a safe space to make those scary choices, to try and succeed, to try and fail, to laugh until your stomach hurts with your collaborators, to be reminded how damn much you LOVE what you do as an Artist, to feel true support, to make magic ... to express yourself using run- on sentences without being judged. Everyone should know this theater company, and for those who don't, you will soon.”

Meet Bree
Artistic entrepreneur with 30 years of theatrical, administrative and education experience. Expertise includes writing, acting, directing, indie production, production design and fabrication, as well as artist and project development.

My primary interests lie in collaboration and new work. I have done everything from house management, fundraising, and public relations to acting, writing, directing and design. I am an artist by temperament and training and an administrator by necessity.

As an actor, I am nimble, intelligent and highly responsive. This skill set also informs my directing style which relies heavily on what I receive from the company of artists I am directing. My approach is always to come prepared, but also flexible enough to be changed by my fellow artists.

As a writer, my projects tend to center around a nagging question or curiosity and I create characters to help me explore those questions. I am intensely interested in why people hurt one another and often explore these scenarios with humor and irreverence.

What Clients Have To Save About Bree...
“I have worked with Playful Substance on two productions now, one on stage and one backstage. The show backstage was me working as a stage manager for the very first time. It made me find one of my biggest passions now and has steered me in a wonderful way to show that I can do more in theater. The show on stage made me realize how much I also love being on stage and gave me the push I needed to get back. Without Playful Substance, I probably wouldn’t be a Stage Manager and be where I am today. I also wouldn’t have been reminded of my love for being on stage. This company is filled with amazing talent and people who have become like family to me.”

"I didn't use to think of myself as a writer, and I'm always very judgemental of my work (aren't we all), having English as a second language I am self conscious, but working with Bree and Playful Substance’s Writers’ Group I feel like I am at a safe space, because that's what she's created. I'm free to share, and write as much "horse shit" (as she says) as I want because something will come out if I keep at it! A weekly meeting makes me write constantly! I have found the Writers’ Group gives helpful and constructive feedback, direction, trust and most importantly, a great sense of humor."

"I have worked on 3 mainstage productions with Playful Substance, along with several readings (private and public), and have had the privilege of witnessing these projects grow from earlier drafts of themselves into the brave, vibrant, final versions that were unleashed onto the world. Each of these plays were nuanced, and always packed a secret, surprising punch - always somehow going beyond, or outside of its own box, even dodging what the audience may expect or categorize the play to be from the get-go. Where one may expect to experience an evening of laughter, there's always an astounding amount of vulnerability, rage, terror that accompanies it (and vice versa), along with opportunities of overlooked points of view finally being placed in the spotlight. I think the reason these plays were able to reach this level of nuance and humanity is because Playful Substance gives writers a continuously safe room - a safe haven, even - accountability, and time; the same can be said as an actor in any of their rehearsal rooms. Without meaning to sound trite, Playful Substance is the greenhouse in which layered stories can grow. Whenever I have been lucky enough to participate in a reading or a mounted project for this company, I knew I would be taking part in telling a story that really had important things to say, while being presented in an off-beat, sometimes quirky, even "playful" package. I'll always jump at the chance to work with Playful Substance."
