Balikbayan is a magical realism play that explores what it means to “return home” in the Philippines, a land beset by colonization, war and dictatorship. When the bombs of World War II begin to drop, the betrothed Marialena and Jose are forced to abandon their plans and promises to family, and set out to find shelter and home in a changed world. As their own family grows, Marialena, Jose, and their daughter Carmelita must reckon with familial cycles of violence and historical trauma in the early days of the Marcos dictatorship. How can the family interrupt legacies while also paying tribute to their ancestors? Throughout the play, the family finds home through tastes of their homeland: eating kakanin in celebration, daing in conflict, and passing down the recipe for chicken adobo.
